Reflection 🔑

When looking back at the spring semester and the class of English 102 I've learned a lot about what I enjoy writing about. This class has really helped me in finding out the things I do enjoy in writing and the literature to read. It’s made me feel more comfortable with writing in general and about the things I enjoy. From music, pop culture, ideas, and other things like that. Writing about my favorite artist has opened my perspective on the world of literature with how anything can be connected. Through the lens of a different perspective this changed the way I write and analyze new pieces I read. I’ve definitely grown as a writer and thinker throughout the course of the class. I was able to push myself to write about these pieces and truly understand the questions being asked while being able to answer them with ease. Comparing my writing skills from now to last year or even last semester. I've improved significantly from the techniques I now use to the way I format my sentences to how I've connected the pieces we’ve read to relevant pop culture in postmodernism.

As a part of the reflection, it comes to question what the most enjoyable part of the class was and when asked many things to come to mind. From the pubs, stories, fish bowls and many more it was difficult to pick. Looking back and throughout the semester, the thing I enjoyed the most about the class were the pubs we wrote. The pubs allowed me to talk about topics I was interested in with the connection portion of it. This connection gave me a thing to look forward to whenever a new pub was announced. Allowing for me to think and wonder how I can relate a certain story to a song or album which meant a lot to me. Finding those connections did make the writing process overall more enjoyable and accessible for me to answer the question at hand.

English 102 presented a lot of ideas throughout the semester but the idea that really resonated with me was the idea of really pushing yourself. Pushing yourself when writing or talking about topics in literature. This resonated with me because it’s a philosophy I already believed in and used throughout my life from school to myself, and to other aspects of my life. Using this mindset allows for people to really push the expectations that they have for themselves, which would surprise and motivate them more to do the things they want to. In hand the idea of believing in yourself can be attached to this idea, with the belief that you can do anything that you put your mind to. The state of pushing yourself will kick in and make you see results instead of never doing that and giving up. I’ve used this throughout my life, but this class has shown me how this mentality can be used for I’m thinking in class rather than other aspects of life.

When thinking about the future and the aspects surrounding it. Writer and thinker isn’t something that pops up immediately but after this course I realized how these skills won’t simply go away even though I'm pursuing a career in civil engineering. My skills as a writer and thinker will still grow and expand over the next few years while in college and in the workforce. From this I'll have to present myself in a written way and in my critical thinking on what to do. The idea said earlier about pushing yourself will become a vital part of my future and my thinking as an adult. While I won’t be writing essays about pieces in post modernism these skills as a writer and thinker will set me apart from the crowd in my far future.

  1. Derek, I hope you have an amazing summer and I hope to see you in the Fall. I had lots of fun in this class, and I know everybody else had a good time as well. I know from reading your reflection, you learned a lot from the class. Never forget Professor Brady, our classmates, and myself.

P.S. - Make sure to hold onto the letter, it's an important remembrance of me, but more importantly our class, our amazing classmates, and Professor Brady.
